Beijing·Lupiguan Great Wall
Lupi Pass lies 25 kilometers north of Miyun County seat. As one of the key passes along the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, it leads north into Fengning County in Hebei Province and borders Huairou County to the northwest. The Bai River flows beneath Lupi Pass; with the pass situated close to the river, it was undoubtedly easy to defend yet difficult to attack—an excellent example of how ancient strategists leveraged the local terrain to repel invaders. Beyond the pass itself, the Ming Great Wall plunges straight from the summits of the eastern and western mountains down into the valley floor, with Lupi Pass perched on the west bank of the Bai River. Its gateway is narrow, allowing only a single person or horse to pass through, underscoring its perilous location. On either side of the pass’s gate rise sheer cliffs, their rugged slopes bearing a mottled pattern reminiscent of deer hide—hence the name “Lupi Pass.”
