In the suburbs of Beijing, there lies a Ming Great Wall site surrounded by mountains on three sides and blessed with distinct four seasons. Striking rows of windmills stand tall, while alpine meadows—known as the “Little Tibet” of the Beijing countryside—await to unfold their splendor. Along the way, wildflowers bloom on the hillsides, harmonizing with the rolling landscapes, and quietly bestowing upon visitors a unique charm steeped in the timeless allure of the Great Wall. Walking along the unrenovated sections of the ancient Great Wall is like unfolding the folds of history, leaving one profoundly moved by a civilization both timelessly enduring and brilliantly radiant.

Suburban Beijing · Changyucheng

Changyucheng is situated at the junction of Beijing’s Changping District and Hebei’s Huailai County, with mountains on its east, west, and south sides. It lies south of Diaowogou Valley, from which it derives its name. The fortress was constructed during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, hence the name “Changyucheng.” Stretching 8 kilometers in length, it represents the highest‑elevation section of the Great Wall within Beijing. In addition to its remarkable altitude, this stretch boasts the only circular watchtower—locally known as the “Round Tower”—in the entire Beijing area. During the Ming era, Changyucheng, Zhenbiancheng, and Baiyangcheng were collectively referred to as the Three Northern Frontier Fortresses of Beijing, serving as critical military strongholds in ancient times.

Row of large windmills

The trail through the green woods is relatively gentle, with sections of gravel. On Qinghuai Ridge, windmills spin gracefully in the breeze, their massive blades slicing through the soft mountain air and emitting a deep, resonant hum. Nearby, there’s also a scenic overlook—perfect for snapping photos and checking in!
